You are working in an outpatient Psychology Clinic and a client comes in to the Clinic, who presents as a 35-year-old Australian woman whose parents had moved to Australia from China before she was born. She describes having chronic pain problems, which she says are making her feel very down and interfering with her ability to function in her daily life. She says that she has heard that your Clinic offers mindfulness therapy and she wants to know if that might help her with her problems. Your Clinic has expertise in both Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction and Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy and you decide to examine the research literature to decide which approach would be most suitable for this client, or whether another approach might better assist her with her concerns. Use the research evidence (including meta-analyses, systematic reviews and/or randomized controlled trials as relevant) to guide your discussion of what you would recommend and why. Remember in answering the question to read the literature to understand which therapeutic approach is likely to be most effective for a particular type of client with a particular type of problem in both the short and long term. Consider what sorts of outcomes the client is likely to be able to expect from the approach or approaches you think would be most effective.
